Reflection No.10 - The Last Day!!!!!

Well, 15-days block has finally come to an end yesterday. I would say this is the most relaxing and enjoyable subject i have ever take in my Diploma days till now. Easy assignments and lectures. This is alos the one and only subject which i really feel so at ease taking it, not to worry about the heavy and taxing workload i always have for the other subjects.

EIR, although a short and and almost tax free subject, has really help me in alot of ways. In past, i only know how to use google to look for insiprations and information. I only type like a one-letter word as the search phrase. Now, I know how to find more specific results using multiple keywords , which reduce my time greatly. Now, google is not my only choice when it comes to research. Meta search engines lieke Clusty.com will always be my FIRST choice now. Furthermore, I have also learn how to evaluate a website and determine whether it will be useful to me.

Really, i've never regret taking this subject as my CDS and i strongly encourage those who are pondering whether to take this subject as CDS to take EIR. One will never regret taking this. With so much information and I would say majority of it are on the net, one really have to be equiped with the basic knowledge of seraching on the net effective, and thus the name; Effective Internet Research.

Good choice to my classmates and those who have make thier choice to take this subject up.

I learnt alot. I enjoy it. It's useful. You won't regret.

Reflection No.9

Been so busy this few days after chinese new year, trying to catch up and back to my working pace. This year new year is so not enjoyable with so much work to worry about. Just before i went for CNY house visiting, i did my wiki posting 1st. Well, i was the first few to post up information. Cyber impersonation is quite a specific topic to start with. Looking at how the previous class has done on the 'Cyber Bullying', i feel that our topic was actually a sub-category of thier's. Furthermore, from what i searched from the web, most information were very generic, answering to the topic of 'Cyber Bulling'. Cyber impersonation was so brief and inadequate, even looking for a video in youtube regarding this topic was so difficult. This wetpaint.com is also unstable i would say. I can sign in as my UserID but on screen, any person's ID is reflected.

Well, after all, the whole point is not about looking for information here. Anyone can do so if it's just looking for information. This whole exercise is about trusting one another for adding in more factual information and remove incorrect postings.

Reflection No.8

What a wonderful reunion dinner I had with my family. With a full stomach, lets get back to work!

Lets recap. We did a lesson on Youtube last Friday. Never had i really sit down and think of what's the factors that leads to the overwhelming popularity of Youtube. This lesson really make me think about it and from the point of view of if I'm the CEO of Youtube. WOW!!! Although that's something that will never happen, lets imagine.

Can i ever live without the existence of Youtube?
The answer is a small YES. I was not born in the Internet Age. All these cyber started not long after i was born. Even so, i rarely get in touch with the net only tillthe age of 16. I had my first computer at the age of 12 but only gain access to the net at 16, after my O level. Thus, for 16 years of my life, i'm living as peacefully as it is. Now, i use the net for academic and leisure purposes. Iwould say i play online games more than I watch online videos. Thus, i will still be able to contiune my life as it is without Youtube.

However, i will not deny the fact that Youtube really provide a good platform for education purposes. Many of us use Youtube for different purposes and there is definitely a small minority who use it as a educational tool. As a fashion student, subscribing to runway show from Paris, London, New York and Milan is important to keep up to the trend of top Fashion Designers from the top fashion houses. However, that will definitely cost a bomb to most of us. From youtube, i can watch the show for free. The only hassle is to load the many many parts to connect the whole runway show.

Well, that explain my small YES. In a way, there is no definite answer to it. HAHA!!

Reflection No.7

Hmmm, back to blog reflection again. Well, I'm been questioning myself where would be my dream places for my perfect holiday. Since young, I've been travelling around with my parents for leisure, for relaxation. However, as i ages, this mindset of mine started to change. I really regreted not taking more pictures of the historical architecture of the majestic Bejing palace and the beautifully coloured Gold Coast and many other important and worth mentioning places. Recently, I've been to Vietnam with my family. The foods and shopping failed to excite me. The warfare tunnel and the street life of the vietnamese amazed me. Then i realise, I love to travel around for the architectures, for the life of the people and for the history of the places. It so wonderful to be there to see for myself the magnificient contents the places can offered me. I feel so awake and refresh when i get in touch with this. To me, those who just go overseas mainly for shopping is WASTING their $$. No offence but, the money spent could be more well-spent.

So, where wouldmy "Dream Holiday' be? I would choose ANTARTICA and CAMBODIA. Why this two places? Well, one is full of mysteries while the other is rich in history. Two places, two partcular stuff to look out for; the Aurora Borealis and Angkor Wat respectively.

This two images above are the Aurora Borealis from the antartica.
How this natural light formed? Seriously, i have no idea but more information can be found from WIKIPEDIA. I've read it actually but it's more interesting if you read it personally, you will be lik WOW and continue to find out more. =)
Don't you find this natural lights, the 'Northen Light' amazing and inspiring? I certainly do.

The above pictures with the dull old looking temple is the Angkor Wat in Cambodia. This thousand years old temple is as magnificient as a palace. Sometimes, it just puzzle me how on earth those ancient peoples with limited technology, or none at all, able to build something beyond their capabilites of that time. Well, the architecture of this temple proves to us that they could do it with no help from the technology. One fine day if i ever visit this temple, i'm sure i will, i will definitely take hundreds of pictures of this temple. What a fine architecture. =)

So, this two places would be my 'Dream Holiday'. How do know so much of these places?
Well, i search Google and settle for Wikipedia. Wikipedia has provided me with much information of the places from history to current and the past events. The more i read in depth, the curiosity increased, so do my excitement.

What criteria did i use for evaluate this website? I use the coverage and the currency. Coverage, i would give 8/10. It really provides you with all you need to know in brief texts, just the gist of it. To more in detail, you will have to search other websites and cross-references. It's definitely up-to-date. The information on the Antartica and the Aurora Borealus was updated on 21 jan 2009 and 22 jan 2009 respectively. Angkor Wat was updated on the 18 jan 2009. All were as recent as possible to provide readers with the best of knowledge they can provide. Furthermore, i also used the National Geographic for further information. This reputable website with shows that's so popular give me assurance of the accurate information.

Okay, that' my reflection for today. Have to rush off for classes. Loads of work to do..........EIR......Portfolio PArt 2.......Class Test 2 tomorrow...... slept only for 3 hours yesterday....cont'

haha
that's all folks'
Bye bye

Reflection No.6

Today's class started off with Ms Faridah checking the progress of our Portfolio Part 1. After that, we were introduce to the new practical as well as the start of Portfoolio Part 2. Talkingcock.com was mainly the subject we've been through today. We were all in groups with assigned roles. My group took up the role as the Prime Minister and we are to share our thoughts in the view of the Prime Minister. Frankly speaking, I really wonder how will the Prime Minister react to talkingcock.com. However, I believe he will feel insulted at times but still let it go unless it's too oerboard. Personally, i really like that website. It shows the essences of singaporeans, very real, very original. I feel that it's a reflection of our own culture. Entertaining and hilarious, that web can really let one relax from the stressful world of work and studies. Talkingcock.com talks about everything. A funny and comedy web which promise to deliver laugthers and smile to anyone who reads it. =)

Refkection No.5

18 Jan 2009, Sunday. I know it's a bit late for my entry as the previous class was on last Friday, 16 Jan 2009. Nevertheless, I will still have to do my reflection on Friday lesson.

Browsing and getting in touch with the database is what's the whole lesson is about. I browse through a few like Academic Gateway, Complete Planet and our very own Tp's database. Well, I will say that I'm most comfortable with the Tp's database. Friday class is not the first time i get in touch with Tp's database. In fact, I've used it before to do my assignment from other module like Marketing for Designers and Professional Communication for Designers. Tp's database is a collection of many others. They have different database to accomodate the needs of different students from different schools. Well, I beleive the students who will benefits most are definitely not from Design school. The infomations available there were more of the other schools area. Company profile, informations, articles and news can all be found there. However, it still benefits students from Design like me in a way. Design is design. However, we need suported evidence to support our design sometimes and that's where we search the net and databases for substaintial backups. Thus, Tp's database will be able to help us is some ways or another.

Just finished correcting up my Portfolio Part 1, it's much better than the initial want yeah. Thank Ms faridah for your advice. =)

Reflection No.4

Today's class was pretty short. Completed my Portfolio Part 1 yesterday. However, submission dateline was extended till the end of the block. Though I thought it's not fair, I'm glad dateline is extended so i can make some amendment pointed out by Ms Faridah. My portfolio was okay just that I need to add more information and explanations for my analysis part.

Later in today's lesson, Ms Faridah also went through some of the lectures in preparation of tomorrow class test 1. Well, the effort is there but the class seems to be doing their portfolio, probably to ask her any question if there is. Guess I have to read my lectures again to sit me through the test tomorrow.

Though it's a short reflection, I really have to go now. No worry, I'm going to revise my notes. Tomorrow test 10%. No doubt I have to study for me. HAHA!

Okay, That's all for today. Keep track yeah! =)

Reflection No.3

Today is an unofficial holiday. My lecturer, Ms Faridah is very ill and could not make it to class. One of her colleague came in and pass on instructions to continue with the next exercise. Well, I have not really done it not because I'm slacking around. I'm tidying up my portfolio for submisson, doing the print screen and explanations for the previous lesson properly. Now that is neat and up to my own expectations, I can continue doing the Meta and so on tomorrow, the official no-class day.

I posted my question up on the discussion board. However, I'm worried if no one reply to the thread I posted. And it really do happened. Furthermore, Thursday is the submission. I'm afraid within the short period of time, the replies would not be that great, probably even ZERO reply.

I should just wait and see then. Hopefully some kind souls will help me out.

Reflection No.2

WOW WOW WOW. Well, today's class started off rather positively for me. Ms Faridah showed my blog to the class. Initially, I thought i was a gone case. She gonna explain why this blog needs to be improve and such. However, I was praised and I considered that my blog is a good example of how it shloud be. I'm not really proud of this but what I'm happy about is that I'm on the right track in publishing the right stuffs; reflections of the lessons.

Today, I finally feel the real assignment and dead line coming to me. Thursday is the due date for the portfolio and the next day will have a class test. This week is definitely not my week. Wednesday all the way to Friday, i have 1 submission each day. Gotta burn my MIDNIGHT oil pretty soon. Lesson today teaches us on how to use search engines. Although most of us might already knew how, there all small details that I'm sure most of us will miss. Only till day then i realised how to use the search engines EFFECTIVELY to get the most out of it. It's an important lesson to me. Now, i can applied it across all subjects when doing my research.

Different search engines caters to different form of results as well. Google is a very generic engine where results found are very vast. Scholar Google, another division of Google, provides completely another things. They provide more information in the form of articles written by the pros ( professionals).

Well, today's lesson, in a nut-shell, will definitely be helpful for the future.=)
That's all Folks.

Reflection No.1

The 1st 2 lesson of EIR was a breeze. Workload was definitely manageable. The 1st lesson, I was introduced to the an overview of the subject, a brief on the assignments and the requirements. We formed our own groups and get into a fast get-to-know-each-other. And since my group members are all from my course, we already know each other way before this. Thus, we skipped the introduction of ourselves and went to have some fun from the Ice Breaking lesson planned for us. Before that, a leader has to be chosen and I'm the ONE. I hope it won't be a tough and troublesome task for me as i really have a lot to cope for the another subject running concurrently with EIR.

In-class lesson is not really a lesson to me. Ms Faridah went through the slides rather briefly as she expected us to go through the ppt before class. The rest of the time was used to do our work and for consultation. This is one unique teaching style. Time is fully maximized. If you are make use of the time in class and finished your work, you can focus on the other subjects you have and REST when you get home. What a blessing =).

Setting up the blog was not as draggy as i thought it would be initially. With my old perpestive of blogging, i went on to create 1 and published my post. Well, it's not as bad as i thought it would be as whatever my posts here will be all about my school work.

Part 2 of the assignment is to look for information from different resources and identify the type of purpose/information those particular website offer. And that I know, i can look for answers to my questions not only from just Google, i can look for it in forum and blogs even. It's amazing how these sources can offer you information you need. Maybe some are not relevant but most is definitely helpful. Through this exercise, I've found a few website that offer a lot of information to my research topic, be it personal or organizational. In a nut-shell, it helps.

The following are some of the sources i found for my topic.
Cancer Research UK
OnCoLink
thecancerblog
Personal Blog of a Simple Doctor from India

e-shopping spree!!!!

Wii is what i will buy with the S$500 I have. Voted as the top selling game console of year 2008, Wii has also reach out to the elderly.
I have a busy family. Dad working, mummy keep herself busy with the chores, sisters mugging with books and notes and me, always in school producing the best work i could ever produce with the school equipment. I would like to use this $500 to buy this to keep them relax as well as to create family bonding.
Furthermore, one really do get tired playing. Games like tennis, boxing, golf, at the very least, help one to move his/her body. My parents, both lazy of doing exercise, hopefully will play this to get themselves fit to the minimal. My sisters can also play to relieve themselves from the stress they have from school work.

Definitely worth buying, $420.10, which includes a console, 2 wii remote control, 2 nunchuk, and a total of 14 games. I hope it will not affect my studis in the future.=)

My 1st post

Currently in 2nd year of studies, I'm studying Diploma in Apparel Design and Merchandising. Turning 19 this year, I came from Compassvale Secondary School located in Seng Kang estate. I come from a family of 5 with 2 younger sister. During free time, I would watch some show online or sweat myself out by playing basketball or gym workout.

I hate blogging as i find it a waste of time. I would rather do some other things. What's more, I do not feel easy sharing my personal life with others. Feels like some freaks is keep track of me. Nonetheless, since it's part of this subject, I would break this barrier and give it a try. Well, the 1st post in my is not that difficult though. In fact, it's quite interesting I wold say.

This subject, Effective Internet Research, seems interesting. My lecturer, is a soft spoken lady who seems like a very forgiving person with no temper. The 1st impression she gave me is "hmmm, i guess she's an A lecturer who is friendly and approachable'. I shall wait and see. From what the past class has produced, I'm excited and look forward to the assignment prepared for this sub. =)
